The Thar desert in Rajasthan covers an approximate area of 200,000 sq km and is the third largest in Asia.
Some areas are quintessential desert: smooth sand dunes stretching to the horizon, hospitable only to camels and brightly dresses nomads; other areas are surprisingly varied, with hills, parched scrub and dried river beds.
The desert has tiny hamlets, homes to pastoral tribes, and interesting wildlife. Getting into the saddle on a camel safari is a great way of exploring this fascinating landscape.
