Towards the south of India lie the craggy Western Ghats and the Nilgiris, or Blue Mountains; lush with evergreen tree-cover, these are great places for a cool retreat or gentle hikes.

These ranges are dotted with ancient caves, tiny hill villages and plantations, and play host to a wide range of wildlife, especially rare butterflies, and exquisite flora. These areas are best explored on small walks or longer treks with local guides - and don’t miss the spicy hill food.
