Salem is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Sailam’, denoting an area surrounded by hills and it was these hills which were responsible for Salem’s industrial thrust into the 20th centuary. The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, the second of it’s kind in India is located here. The district is rich in mineral wealth.
