This short introduction to trekking in Ladakh is considered to be one of the easiest in Ladakh as it is at relatively low altitude whilst the walking is fairly gentle with plenty of time to enjoy the views.

You will trek through rugged mountains to arrive at lush green villages set in valleys. Along the way you visit Lamayuru with its moonlandscape and the 12th century Alchi monastery.

Accommodation on the trek is in home-stays and small hotels.

Itinerary

Day 1, LEH TO HEMIS SHUKPACHEN

Drive to Likir where you begin your trek to the village of Yangtang which will take approximately 4 hours. The route is fairly easy; you walk for approximately 4 hours per day and the route seldom goes over 4000m. En route you visit several villages and see the life style of the locals when you meet with them in their fields, or visit them in their houses. From Yangtang it is a short drive to Hemis Shukpachen where you stay for the night.

Day 2, HEMIS SHUKPACHEN TO TINGMOSGANG

Trek from Hemis Shukpachen to Tingmosgang (4 hrs), the famous village of Ladakh which is known for its apricots, apples and walnuts. The village has a palace and the monastery on a hillock.

Day 3, TINGMOSGANG TO ALCHI

From here you drive by jeep to Lamayuru, one of the most famous and spectacular gompas in Ladakh, perched on a steep cliff overlooked by massive mountains. Then drive to Alchi where you stay for the night.

Day 4, ALCHI TO LEH

In the morning you visit the unique Alchi monastery. Built in the 12th century and restored in the 16th century, the monastery still has the original paintings in Kashmiri style. Afterwards, you return to Leh.
